MORE PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE SUGGESTIONS IrfanView (free) IrfanView is a fast and simple image viewer and editor that supports all major graphic formats. In addition, it features drag-and-drop support, directory viewing, TWAIN support, slide shows, batch conversion, and modifications, such as color depth, crop, blur, and sharpen. IrfanView (pronounced Ear-Fan-View) is named for Irfan Skiljan, a programmer from Bosnia. Irfan keeps his users happy by giving them the best Windows picture viewer available with regular updates that expand the program's features. New IrfanView releases have continued virtually nonstop. The Gimp (free) GIMP is a popular open-source image editor originally developed for Unix/Linux. Often lauded as the "free Photoshop," it does have an interface and features similar to Photoshop. Because it's volunteer-developed beta software, stability and frequency of updates could be an issue; however, many happy users report using GIMP for Windows without significant problems. Serif PhotoPlus 6 (free) For a long time, Serif has given away previous versions of their software to entice users to purchase the current version. Currently you can download a completely free, fully-functional version of PhotoPlus 6. PhotoPlus 6 features an export optimizer, editable text, image slicing and image maps, selection tools, smart shapes, third-party plug-in support, red-eye removal tool, and photo enhancement tools. PhotoPlus 6 works on Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, 2000, NT4, and XP. Adobe Photo Album - Starter Edition (free) This Adobe software makes it easy to find, fix, and share your digital photos. Organize your digital photos in a snap. Instantly fix photo flaws in just a click or two. And easily share your memories in a slide show with captions, or e-mail individual photos to family and friends. Adobe Photoshop Elements (not free) Photoshop Elements incorporates many of Photoshop's powerful features without being too overwhelming to the novice user or stripped down to the point that it frustrates experienced users. Now with a photo organizer plus fun photo-sharing projects, it's a perfect all-in-one, affordable solution for the majority of digital camera users. For amateur photographers, digital imaging enthusiasts, and small business users, there is little reason to look beyond Elements for all your photo editing needs. |
